Environmental Training

Environmental Training

Through our Support Services we are able to pass on this knowledge and experience by way of environmental training packages that can be delivered on site at a client’s premises or at various other locations throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The team at ECL have a wealth of knowledge and experience gained over years of involvement with industry and regulators.

We have a range of standard training packages or we can deliver bespoke training to suit the particular needs. Courses range in length from half a day to 3 days and are designed to achieve various levels awareness, from a basic knowledge to an in-depth understanding.

The training can be delivered to suit the organisation ranging from operators to directors.

Our Training Programmes

Operator Monitoring Assessment (OMA)

The introduction of OMA has provided a means to improve the quality and repeatability of air quality monitoring data obtained for the purposes of assessing compliance with emission limits and pollutant loading from point source. This is supported by MCERTS which is the accreditation of those employed in emissions testing and the means to deliver an audit trail for those performing the tests and the means by which testing is carried out.

The aim of the training is to improve the overall knowledge and understanding for those involved in this area of work.

Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016 (EPR)

These regulations superseded the 2010 regulations which in turn superseded the 2007 regulations. There has been a number of amendments to the regulations over the years to bring under the scope of EPR additional industry sectors and various other activities with potential to pollute the environment. The regulations have also been consolidated to encompass other extant legislation such as the Waste Incineration Directive, Solvent Emission Directive and the Industrial Emissions Directive.

The training provides a background to the regulations, the key aspects of the legislation and the requirements placed on operators to ensure they are complaint with their permit conditions.

Industry sector training can also be delivered where the key regulatory requirements of the sector are highlighted and the means to comply with requirements are discussed. This training can be tailored to the sector in question or made site specific.

Environmental Management Systems (EMS)

ISO 14001 is one of the EMS recognised by regulators and accreditation to the standard goes a long way to helping maintain compliance with the requirements of permits and other relevant environmental legislation. It is also a means to deliver continuous improvement and help create efficiency savings. The existence of other management systems can make it easier to ‘bolt on’ EMS without the need to develop all new paperwork and administrative systems.

For smaller organisations the means to implement ISO 14001 may be beyond their capabilities. However, a tailored package that illustrates the essence of what is required to be deemed as an appropriate system could be what is necessary to maintain compliance and have an audit trail that proves it.

Our EMS training looks to deliver the knowledge and tools with which to develop the environmental management systems suitable for every organisation.

Quality Management Systems (QMS)

ISO 9001 is based on the 8 principals of management systems linked to the key aspects of organisational management that are required to improve and maintain quality services and products. The 8 principals are:

  • Customer Focus
  • Leadership
  • People Involvement
  • Process Approach
  • Systematic Approach to Management
  • Continual Improvement
  • Factual Approach to Decision Making
  • Mutually Beneficial Supplier Relations

For most people, the means to deliver these 8 principals requires a ‘mind shift’ in the way they approach their work. It requires both cultural change on an individual level, and also collective cultural change at an organisational level. It is not necessarily an easy process to go through but can be very rewarding, enlightening, and for some, life changing.

The principals are applicable for any size of organisation but the time taken and means to deliver the principals will vary greatly depending on the size of an organisation.

Internal Quality Audit Training

To have an effective management system of any kind you have to be able to audit the system. This requires having trained auditors that can:

  • Identify non-conformities
  • Recommend implementing corrective action
  • Re-audit to ensure compliance is attained

The audit process is not a one-off process, it is continual and audit frequency may change depending on issues that may arise. It is a means to implement continual improvement and strive for excellence on all levels.

Good internal audits will make external audits less painful. A good internal auditor will not wait for the next audit date if they spot something that does not look right. They will audit there and then! Our internal quality audit training provides the knowledge and skills to do this.

Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) Training

We can deliver a range of training to assist local authorities with their LAQM duties. These are some of topics we can assist with:

  • Setting up diffusion tube networks to identify pollution hotspots
  • Planning and implementing a Detailed Assessment using diffusion tubes for wide area coverage
  • Performing screening assessments for potential pollution hotspots
  • Specific short term monitoring surveys (such as may be required for planning development proposals), with subsequent annualisation of data for reporting purposes
  • Writing reports for monitoring surveys
  • Completion of annual air quality reports
